John P. Meier, 1942-2022

Msgr. Meier, died Oct. 18 at the age of 80.

He was born in New York City in 1942 and received his undergraduate theological training at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, followed by graduate studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1967.

His first assignment was as an associate pastor. But by 1972, he had returned to St. Joseph’s Seminary, this time as a professor and soon afterward he returned to Rome to obtain a doctorate in sacred Scripture in 1976 from the Pontifical Biblical Institute.

He led the seminary’s Scripture studies department before taking on a professorship at The Catholic University of America in Washington, in 1984. He taught there for 14 years before moving on the University of Notre Dame in 1998.

Msgr. Meier retired in 2018 after 20 years in Notre Dame’s theology department, but he stayed on campus to take on occasional teaching assignments and to continue his research and writing.

The first half of the book of Daniel contains world-famous stories like the Writing on the Wall. These stories have mostly been transmitted in Aramaic, not Hebrew, as has the influential apocalypse of Daniel 7. This Aramaic corpus shows clear signs of multiple authorship. Which different textual layers can we tease apart, and what do they tell us about the changing function of the Danielic material during the Second Temple Period? This monograph compares the Masoretic Text of Daniel to ancient manuscripts and translations preserving textual variants. By highlighting tensions in the reconstructed archetype underlying all these texts, it then probes the tales’ prehistory even further, showing how Daniel underwent many transformations to yield the book we know today.

Ericksen on Church Struggle

Almost no serious scholar, for example, now claims that the Protestant ‘Church Struggle’ was a struggle against the Nazi state.The Barmen Declaration itself, the foundation for the Confessing Church, warns its readers: ‘Be not deceived by loose talk, as if we meant to oppose the unity of the German nation!’ The word ‘Jew’ is never mentioned in the Barmen Declaration, nor is there any critique of other Nazi policies. This ‘struggle’ was theological and ecclesiastical, an attack upon the alleged heresy of the Deutsche Christen.

The Bund called for a nationwide pastors' oath of loyalty to Hitler... In June, a church official in Anhalt reported that not one pastor in his region had refused to take the oath, not even those affiliated with the Confessing Church. In July, the Ostmark (Austrian) church president similarly announced that all of his pastors had also supported the oath. In Thuringia, most of the Confessing Church pastors took the oath as well.

Yet after the oath had been implemented in the church, Reich officials repudiated it... declared it voluntary and a matter of internal church concern. No special recognition of the church by the Reich would be granted in exchange for the oath of loyalty.

梁日華牧師食包食到入醫院

榮兄,

我都已經好耐冇買本書嚟睇, 但近日我買咗本: Susannah Heschel, "The Aryan Jesus". 我仲睇緊, 但本書的內容好過癮, 講納粹時期為數不少的神學家同教會領袖點樣用盡方法嚟幫基督教「去猶化」, 例如宣揚耶穌唔係猶太人, 重新edit過本聖經將好多有猶太背景的內容攞走, 教導D信徒用其他說話去取代哈利路亞之類. 你都知我以前讀書嗰時, 就係學透過從猶太人古代文化去了解聖經, 我而家先知, 我呢個時代會有呢個研究方向, 係因為我地上一代有呢段「去猶化」的歷史, 而家的方向其實係一個反彈, 回應過去的這一段時期. 

我覺得好有趣, 睇返過去一D其實都好出名的神學家, 原來曾經講過耶穌唔係猶太人呢一類無厘頭說話, 學識並冇令佢地更接近真理, 只係為佢地提供更多花招嚟包裝連佢地自己都知道的假話. 可惜本書冇中文翻譯, 唔係我就寄本俾你睇.

最近錫安教會嗰個梁日華牧師入咗醫院, 事關佢食包食到爆血管, 唔係講笑, 佢地個blog話: 「到了清晨3:20⾄4:01，⽇華牧師仍然與『籌備牧師今年⽣⽇』的團隊，如常溝通，安排著各樣籌備⼯作。及⾄⽇華牧師吃了他最喜愛的『⽟⼦雙層將軍漢堡』後，由於夜已深，⾝體消化能⼒下降， 不久，⾝體就開始出現不適。到了清晨約5時，⽇華牧師突然出現嚴重胃痛及劇烈⼼跳。及⾄上午7:33，⽇華牧師發現⾃⼰的症狀，正是冠⼼病，若果持續下去，將會引致⼼臟猝死。⽇華牧師隨即緊急召喚住在附近的全職同⼯，安排送他到九龍浸會醫院，約早上8:07，全職同⼯駕⾞，將⽇華牧師送到浸會醫院。」

其實佢一把年紀, 有咩急病都好正常, 不過佢一向以健康達人自居, 成日叫D信眾買埋D無厘頭健康產品, 教人食太陽、咖啡灌腸之類, 所以佢自己大病, 令到間教會好緊張, 立即狂出post, 要將佢病呢件事扭到變成好事. 例如, 佢地話今次日華牧師急病, 正好證實佢的地位: 「Tony Stark 因⼼臟問題變成 Iron Man，並在《Iron Man》第⼀集的最後⼀幕承認自己就是 Iron Man，並於最後⼀集的《終局之戰》中， 他更說出一句經典對⽩︰『I am Iron Man.』 作完美呼應。這次日華牧師入院事件也是因心臟問題而入院，而出院後他得出一個結論，他能說出：『I am Iron Man.』」

又話今次日華牧師今次入一入醫院, 就好似約書亞同耶穌過一過約旦河咁, 出返嚟就變超人: 「神給予⽇華牧師入院事件的印證信息，是為著增加我們的信⼼，相信我們經歷了從神⽽來的⾝份轉換。就正如約書亞世代過了約旦河後，經歷⾝份轉換，變成了戰無不勝的軍隊；主耶穌於過約旦河後，也經歷⾝份轉換， 於三年半中，⾏出各種前所未⾒的神蹟。⽽今次，⽇華牧師經歷約旦河，神是以 Man of Steel 和 Steelman，指向他⾝份轉換的內容，轉換成 Superman 及 Iron Man 般， 展開末後三年半的神蹟之旅。」
